Nightingale is a signalling system for nurse call, which enables command and control

Have up to 256 end units. Elements are connected in parallel on a single cable with4

Leads.

Nightingale provides advanced patient-nurse signalling and interphones

Communications at an affordable price to hospitals and nursing homes. Easy to

install and economical to operate. Patient ward, room, bed and priority status are

displayed on the station screen. Waiting calls are automatically stored in non-

volatile memory, in order of priority with date and time.

Nightingale is user-programmable, so it can always deliver the service which best

fits the immediate need.

Nightingale is a modular system and can be easily extended.

1.1 Main properties of the system

* Only 4 wires being required to carry supply current and signals

* Receiving of call indication on the bed level

* Display of calls, including number ward and room, number of bed/toilet,

intercom call, including the date and hour of the event.

* Real confirmation of indication (from the system) by output on the bed, room

overdoor and/or corridor level.

* Different approach to calls from bed, calls from the toilet or emergency calls to

Doctors staff with distinct tones and visual indication.

* Programmed canceling of calls on each one of the levels.

* Silencing of a siren for a programmable period of time.

* Direct talking connection of indication intercom to nurse station.

* Possibility of calling from nurse station each intercom position separately.

* Use of a single system for a number of wards, while receiving an indication of

the ward number in addition to the room and bed numbers on the operating

board at nurse station.

* It is possible to transfer control between different nursing stations in the facility.

The flexibility is important during nighttime operation or periods of low census.

 

* Possibility of combining a number of wards on each operating board, including

dynamic change.

* The system interface with several pocket page systems to instantly notify staff

of incoming calls.

* Display of the history of calls as well as cancellation times (time of arrival of

the nurse to the patient), mute times, failures and intercom calls.

* Current printing of calls, cancellations, mute and failures as well as printing of

the history Log on a printer.

* Connecting of up to 32 operating boards to control the system.

* Special working mode for the Sabbath. In this mode, the system enters

automatically the Sabbath condition on the beginning of Sabbath and quits

this condition at the end of Sabbath.

* The "Tsomet" Institute, headed by Rabbi Israel Rosen, has approved the

Sabbath operation of the system.

2. Structure of the system

Nightingale system requires minimal wiring which means less time, less labor, and

less cost to install. The system's circuits are modular in design so they're easy to

maintain and service.

The system consists of the following submits: (see figure 1).

2.1. Main control unit

This unit, the core of the system, is connected to a voltage of 220V and a

chargeable battery and, in turn, end units, a printer, a computer, operating

boards for the nurse station and operating boards for wall mounting are

connected to the unit.

2.2. End units

The end units are digital units, interconnected in parallel on a common

Multiplex line that leaves the system.

The cards are coded by dipswitches to obtain indications. There are 4 types of

Cards:

2.2.1. Input cards

These cards are designed for connection to call buttons installed at

bedside or in the toilet as well as for connection to call cancellation

buttons and emergency buttons for calling of medical personnel.

2.2.2. Output cards

These cards are designed for connection of call indication lights (a

single call, section indicators, some combination of calls or direction

indicators) and/or acoustic devices and intercom operation.

2.2.3. Input/Output cards

Cards for combination of calls and indication lights,

calls+indication+call cancellation, calls and intercom or

calls+intercom+call cancellation.

2.2.4. Buffer separating cards

Cards that isolate the line leaving the main control unit from the

Multiplex lines that leave them, thus enabling isolation of failures.

Failures occurring in the units connected to the Buffer separators will

generally not pass to the main line and will not disturbs the entire

system. Short circuits between lines beyond the separator will not

affect the preceding lines. The separators also serve for restoration of

signals and amplification in long and/or noisy lines.

2.3. Operating boards

All operating boards are connected in parallel. The operating boards enable:

temporary delay of a siren until arrival at the patient's bed, various displays,

history as well as more complicated operations, such as temporary cancellation of

calling stations and system programming. Via the operating boards intercom

connections to each bed and listening to the patient's bed can be performed.

There are two types of operating boards

2.3.1. Wall-mounted operating board

An operating board with an illuminated alpha-numeric screen permits

display of events (calls), including the time of the event as well as

faults, cancellations and delay of the siren. Displays historical

events.

2.3.2. Operating system for the nurse's station

A sloping box with a large illuminated alpha-numeric display. In addition

to the functions included in the wall-mounted operating board, the box

contains an internal loudspeaker volume control, a separate

pushbutton (not on the keyboard) for siren mute and telephone handset

for clear 2-way conversation.

3. The system has 3 operating modes

- A Programming mode: for programming of the system parameters - intended for

the installer.

Walk-Test mode: user friendly checking and operating every input and output.

-An operating mode: which is the normal condition of the system in operation -

intended for the user.

4. The system operates as follows:

4.1. The patient pushes the call button in his room.

The call is received in a number of modes:

1. A light is turned on at the Bed/Room/Corridor.

2. A message is recorded on the nurse's screen and a buzzer sounds at the

nurse's station.

3. The higher priority patient bed interphone is automatically connected.

4. The call is received by a beeper (option).

5. Nurse responds by pressing on the mute button of the console. Muting is

automatically canceled after a presentable time delay, or when a call button in

the area concerned is actuated.

6. Nurse enters to patient room and presses on the button at the door or bed

unit. This cancels the call but allow buzzer signals from other calls to operate.

4.2 Patient's call from the toilet (emergency) or nurse initiates emergency call:

1. Fast blinking light above the room.

2. A message is recorded on the nurse's screen, rapid sound of the buzzer at

the nurse's station.

3, 4, and 5 as above.

The call is displayed at the nurse's station: on the level of room or bed, date

and hour of the call as well as any operation performed in the system. Silencing

of the alarm is recorded as well as the hour and date of cancellation of the call

from the room, faults and mute are also recorded.

The Buzzer at the nurse's station after pressing silencing button (mute) will

repeats itself at intervals that can be programmed by the installer. Final

cancellation of the call will take place only from the calling room by pressing a

cancellation button. The nurse may abolish call buttons as she chooses.

4.3. Printer link:

An optional printer link can log to paper continuous and history report of system

status and any occurring events. All activities done by the user including time of

calls or messages and time of their cancellation will be printed.

5. Operating an intercom in the NIGHTINGALE system (option).

With an intercom integrated in the system, there are different options for operating:

* The display at nurse's station shows an intercom call message with the numbers of

the calling room and bed.

* The higher priority patient calling bed interphone is automatically connected.

* Call (dial) from a nurse's station to a bed.

* Call and listening from the station.

* Switch from call to call by pressing "E" in the case of a number of calls at manual mode.

* Switch from call to automatic call after termination of the next call, at automatic mode.

In the case of a call from a bed, a physical connection takes place, between the calling

intercom and the receiver at the nurse's station. It is then possible to speak to the calling

intercom. During the conversation, the red led at the nurse's station will be permanently on and

a note on the connection to the intercom will appear. The connection will be disconnected after

a preprogrammed period of time or by pressing the C keyA on the keyboard.

In the case of several calls, it will be possible to pass to the next call by pressing the E

key. The routed call will be the one displayed, another possibility is the automatic

connection to the next priority calling interphone.

When there are calls, pressing the "1" key will give the automatic connection mode. After

completing the conversation with the first intercom (at the end of the time or afterA pressing

the C key), the intercom will be automatically switched to the next call. Pressing the "1" key

again will discontinue this mode.

Connection to any intercom station can be initiated by pressing the PHONE button

followed by the (3-digit) intercom number.

6. Example of planning a "nurse-patient" system.

In the following example the system controls three wards, with two rooms in each

ward and with a toilet and two beds in each room. (Figure No. 2) indication will be on

the bed level, including intercom. Three nurse stations (KP) will be connected to the

system, so that each station will control one ward.

In the third ward (D3) there will be an emergency call button for medical staff in each

room.

An indicator light at the entrance to each room will indicate a call. The output indicator

light will blink if the call is from toilet or emergency, and be permanently "on" if the call

is from bed. It should be connected to an Input/Output card integrated in the system for

two purposes: Calls from toilet and indicator. There is an additional use of another

Input/Output card: a call from a bed and an intercom call.

All system parameters like the function of every E.O.L., the A connection of E.O.L's to

words/room/bed, parameters as time duration of an intercom call and time of bell

silencing by theA button at the nurse's station, will be programmed See figure No. 3

for the inputs and outputs that are needed inA this example.
